FIREWOOD SUPPLY and/or DELIVERY

For Melbourne, Northern & Western Suburbs.

  • » Have you been after firewood that is ready to use, no splitting?
  • » Would you like good firewood that is solid and slow burning?
  • » Do you want firewood select sized for purpose e.g pizza oven and pot belly stove

If you said yes to the above questions; contact Laurie at Special Organic Soils

I aim to have 3 varieties of wood available as much as possible; Ironbark, Red-gum or plain bush wood. [Red-gum will be getting harder to source]. Bush-wood will be other eucalyptus varieties, however will be sourced so as not to infringe on the conservation of forest or any woodlands. The aim will be to source the wood so that it is solid and sound of composition so it will be medium to slow burning. Red-gum & Ironbark will always burn better because they are a denser composition. Red-gum or ironbark mill off-cuts will be sourced as recycled wood.

The firewood will be stacked and stored for drying (so it is no longer green-not in color either) so ultimately the wood will be guaranteed to burn well, different woods have different drying periods.

The firewood will be select sized by sawing and/or splitting from nugget size to split logs, so it is perfect size for; BBQ, Pizza ovens, Charcoal fires, Pot belly stoves, Combustion heaters or cookers.

The firewood will be available in easy to handle size 20 kg Bags, however I will do bulk loads of 3 metre³ quantity.

What would you the customer like; I would welcome any Expressions of Interest, posted letter or emailed.Arrow

Some information about firewood

  1. To tell if wood is still green or has been dried, bang two bits of wood together – possibly end to end, if the wood is well dried it will give a sharp crack sound; if it is still green it will give a dull thud sound. With most gum wood, the bark will have fallen off the wood.
  2. Beware of lightning struck wood, the wood can be absolutely dry-but it won’t burn. Don’t blame the wood yard or whom you bought it from, it is very hard to pick lightning struck wood – even I’ve been caught out. Put the bad bits aside and show the WOODY next time he delivers, ask him if he will change them – if he does, he’s a good man, if he doesn’t- then get someone else.
  3. Think about using other types of wood (red-gum isn’t going to be around forever) Blackwood and wattle burn very well, messmate and stringy bark does well. Any of the box wood is great [grey or yellow] in fact it is as good as or better than red-gum. Paperbark is good wood, but it must be thoroughly dried, mix it with other wood.
  4. Use recycled wood like old house frame timber, old fence timer – the hardwood rails or the posts. A 25 cm electric saw will cut this wood well, just take your time with the saw and be CAREFUL!.

DO-NOT TRY BURNING TREATED WOOD, IT WON’T BURN ANY GOOD AND IT’S TOXIC.

SUMMARY ; WE HAVE TO LEARN TO MIX OUR WOOD, USE A LITTLE BIT OF EVERY TYPE OF WOOD, SO THE BETTER TYPES OF WOOD LAST LONGER. USE THE WOOD EFFICIENTLY. WE SHOULD BE GROWING TREES JUST FOR FIREWOOD, CONVERTING THE CARBON WE PUT IN THE AIR BACK INTO OXYGEN.
